Main Ports

The Port of Goole is on the west of the Humber Estuary on the banks of the River Ouse and is the UK’s most inland port being 50 miles from the North Sea. Being this far in land means the Port has excellent connections to the main road network in the UK. The Port handles a wide range of goods including animal feeds, biomass, oils, scrap metal and timber. Due to the Port having a constant water level, it is an ideal port for the import and export of project cargo and the Port has invested in equipment such as cranes to handle this type of cargo.

The Port of Grimsby is located on the south bank of the Humber at the mouth of the river. The Port is ideally located for trade with the rest of Europe especially Northern Europe and has shipping services to the Baltics for example. The Port handles a large variety of goods including a high number of vehicles passing through the Port. Since the North Sea has become an ideal location for offshore wind energy, Grimsby has become a vital port for O&M activities in the industry. Organisations such as Dong Energy have located bases at the Port to maintain the wind farms already operating in the North Sea and the future wind farms.

Located up river on the north bank of the Humber’ the Port of Hull is the second largest port on the Humber and one of the largest in Northern England. The Port location is ideal for being a vital link between the UK and Northern Europe but it isn’t only Europe that the Port has strong ties with. At the start of 2017, Hull was the top port in the UK for trade with North America. The Port handles a wide variety of products from chemicals to cars. The Port is also a base for P&O Ferries with passenger links to Rotterdam and Zeebrugge. Over recent years the port has taken advantage of the need for green energy with Siemens locating their wind blade manufacturing facility in the Port and Drax using the Port to bring in biomass.

On the south bank of the Humber river, Immingham is one of the UK’s busiest ports. Also, the Port is one of the UK’s fastest growing ports. Immingham is the biggest port on the Humber and handles a variety of goods from cars to oils. The Port has direct access to deep water channels which no other port on the Humber has and this allows Immingham to service the larger ships that can access the Humber. Also, the Port has excellent links to transport networks in the UK including the road network by the M180 and has rail infrastructure that can handle over 260 rail movements a week. Humberside Airport is only a 20 minute drive from the Port.

The Port of Killingholme is on the south bank of the river Humber just North of the port of Immingham. Killingholme specialises in Ro-Ro and is one of the largest ports in the UK for the import and export of cars and because of this some car manufacturers have located part of their car handling facilities near the Port such as Kia and partner, Paragon. To be a leader in car imports and exports, the Port invested in facilities such as new access roads, 6 purpose built berths which can be access as new access roads, 6 purpose built berths which can be accessed 24 hours a day and a secure compound to store vehicles.
